Implant-supported fixed and overdenture solutions

An implant-supported overdenture is a removable denture that attaches to implants and therefore stays firmly in place. It sits between a conventional full denture and a fixed implant prosthesis: the denture does not move while you eat or speak, but you can take it out yourself to clean it.

It is retained either by individual attachments or by a bar connecting the implants. Two implants in the lower jaw and four in the upper are usually enough, which makes the treatment more affordable than an All-on-X solution.

Who an overdenture suits

Patients whose existing full denture will not stay in place, particularly in the lower jaw.
Where the budget does not allow a fixed implant prosthesis.
Where bone volume only allows a few implants to be placed.
Where being able to remove the denture and clean it thoroughly is important.

Materials and fabrication

The implants are titanium. The denture base is made from acrylic, often reinforced with a metal mesh, and the teeth are acrylic or composite. The replaceable plastic inserts in the attachments wear with use and are renewed periodically to keep the fit snug.

Treatment steps

Diagnostics. 3D imaging and assessment of bone volume, deciding the number of implants.
Surgical stage. The implants are placed.
Healing. The implants fuse with the bone over 3–6 months.
Attachments. Attachments or a bar are fitted to the implants.
Denture. The overdenture is made and adjusted.

Price

The cost of an overdenture depends on the number of implants and the retention system. Implant placement surgery starts from €600 per implant, with the prosthetic part charged separately. Care and durability

Take the denture out every day and clean both the denture and the attachments on the implants. It is advisable to leave it out overnight so the gums can rest. The replaceable inserts in the attachments are usually renewed every one to two years. Visit the hygienist twice a year and the dentist annually for a check-up.
